The mesothelium is a thin film that curve the chest and belly and surrounds the organs in these areas. The main fuction of this film is to produce aqueous fluid that helps to reduce the friction between the two layers of mesothelium. The two layers are known as perietal and viseral layer and fluid is between these two layers is thin aqueous fluid. Mesothelium has some barrier properties as well. The lining of these thin layers is formed by mesothelial cells, So it is a cancer of mesothelial cells.
Tumor or cancer of mesothelial cells is known as Mesothelioma. Tumors of the mesothelium can be benign or be malignant (cancerous) . So cancerous tumor of the mesothelium is called a malignant mesothelioma, but this is often shortened to just mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a type of malignant cancer that starts in the cells that line certain parts of the body, especially the chest, abdomen, and heart and sometimes the reporductive organs of the body. These cells protect organs by making a special fluid that allows the organs the layer covering them to slide in between. So the main function this fluid is to make easier for the lungs to move during breathing.
In mesothelioma there is excessive production of this fluid in the different cavities of the body, depending on in which cavity the cancer develops. The symptoms of the diseases are mainly due to the excessive production of this fluid.
