Staging of Mesothelioma

Staging is the process by which it is find out how far the cancer has spread.  Staging of mesothelioma is based mostly on radiological imaging studies such as x-rays, CT scans, and MRI scans. The staging cancer tells the doctor and pathologist how far the cancer has spread and what are the chances of survival as well as effectiveness of the treatment at that particular stage of the cancer. The clinical as well as lab tests help in diagnosing mesothelioma cancer give information about the stage of the disease as well.  Staging is important because treatment is often aimed according to the stage of a cancer and different stages of the cancer have different treatment options.  Although there are three  main types of Mesothelioma: Plural, Pericardial and Peritoneal staging has thus far been established for the most frequently occurring form of this cancer – pleural – and not for the others as it has been studied the most in past years. So it is the only type of mesothelioma for which most accepted staging classification exists.
