Associated disorders with mesothelioma

In very severe cases, patients may experience from a number of various disorders:

  • Pneumothorax: It means Air in Lung Cavity. It is a collapse of the lung tissue that is caused by excess air in the pleural cavity that compresses the lung tissue thus making it difficult to breath. Its symptoms include apnea (shortness of breath) , pain in the chest, cyanosis and sometimes unconsciousness and death.
  • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC): This is extremely dangerous and troublesome disorder occurs when small blood clots which begin to consume all clotting factors of the blood. Abnormal bleeding occurs at sites of blood samples or surgical wounds, as blood does not clot and keeps on bleeding.
  • Thrombophlebitis: This is called the inflammation of blood vessels. In Thrombophlebitis the blood clots in the vein, usually in the deep venous system of the leg veins. This blood clot when dislodged may cause fatal pulmonary embolism.
  • Pulmonary Embolism: This happens after blood clotting in the deep veins of the legs. Symptoms include difficulty breathing to sudden death.
  • Jaundice: This is a yellow discoloration of the skin and sclera of the eye and is disorder occurs when there are disruption normal processes of the metabolism and the excretion of bilirubin.
  • Hypoglycemia: This is lower than normal blood sugar levels which lead to symptoms like confusion, fatigue, disorientation, slurred speech, resulting from inadequate supplies of glucose to the brain.
  • Many Tumor Masses: Tumors may not be malignant itself but in the lattar stages of peritoneal mesothelioma tumor may grow to such a size that there may be pressure effects caused by the tumor. They may cause intestinal obstructions, abdominal pain, and excess fluid in the abdomen (Ascities).
