The Death of Merlin Olsen

Football Hall of Famer Merlin Olsen died at age 69 of complications related to malignant mesothelioma on thursday, March 11th 2010. Olsen had been diagnosed last year with the condition and was receiving ongoing chemotherapy treatments. Malignant mesothelioma is a cancerous disorder of the protective linings of organs such as the heart and lungs. In January of 2010, Olsen filed a lawsuit against NBC for exposing him to asbestos, the fibrous building material which causes malignant mesothelioma in addition to other disorders.

Merlin Olsen made the pro-bowl 14 times and was selected by Sports Illustrated in 2000 as one of Utah’s 50 greatest athletes of the century. A graduate of Utah State, Olsen went All-American twice and received the Outland trophy. Recently, the inhalation of asbestos fibers over a long period of time has been compared to smoking cigarettes, and a long-term “side effects” is also the same. A person can develop lung cancer or smoking cigarettes for a long time or be exposed to asbestos for too long. If you are a smoker who is also exposed to asbestos, the chances of developing lung cancer increased significantly.

Combination PET-CT Scan More Effective at Diagnosing Mesothelioma than PET or CT Scans Alone

While there are many imaging techniques that help physicians diagnose mesothelioma, but PET-CT scans are the preferred technique. A recent study published by the Department of Thoracic Surgery at Catholic University in Rome, Italy, indicates that using PET-CT scans in conjunction can determine mesothelioma staging more accurately during diagnosis.

There are four stages of mesothelioma which vary slightly from each other. Stage one indicates the first stage of mesothelioma where the tumor is localized, there is no lymph node involvement, and the cancer has not spread to other tissues or organs. Stage one is easily treatable by surgery and other treatments. Stage four is the final stage of mesothelioma where the cancer has invaded multiple regions such as the chest wall, the abdomen, or the pericardium.
